SIDS - Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

What we should know about SIDS and what we as parents ans caregivers can do !!

Cot Death or SIDS ( Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is described as the sudden and unexpected death of an apparently healthy infant under one year of age. The diagnosis of SIDS is only made after all possible causes have been ruled out through post mortem , death scene investigations and review of the infant’s medical history

What we can do as parents and caregivers.

  • PLACE BABY ON THE BACK TO SLEEP

  • The risk of cot death is significantly reduced with babies sleeping on their backs.

  • Sleep positioners are very useful to encourage back sleeping from an early age.

  • Babies are not more likely to choke on their backs, in fact they’re more likely to choke on their vomit if lying on their tummies.

  • During the day when baby is awake, place him on his tummy to help strengthen neck and back muscles.

Safe Cot environment

  • To prevent baby wriggling under the covers, use a feet to-foot-wedge, or place baby’s feet at the foot of the cot and make up the bed so that the covers reach no higher than the shoulders. Tuck in the covers so that they cannot slip over baby’s head.

  • Ensure that you use fitted sheets that will not come lose and entangled with wriggling baby. Stay safe fitted sheets have a velcro band which holds sheet securely in place.

Risk factors

  • Young unmarried mothers

  • Lack of prenatal care

  • Premature births

  • Low birth weight for gestational age

  • Smoking during and after pregnancy

  • Multiple pregnancies
